The real cost of a yes
Every yes looks free. A drink with friends, one more episode, a quick look at your phone. Each one is small enough to wave through, and that is exactly how they add up.
But nothing is free. A yes is paid for in the only currency you can't earn back: your time and your attention. The evening you gave to scrolling is an evening you didn't give to the thing you said mattered.
The trick is that the bill never arrives on the night itself. It arrives months later, as the book you didn't write, the body you didn't build, the skill you are still meaning to start.
A yes is paid for in the only currency you can't earn back.
So we count the other side instead. Every time you feel the pull and let it pass, that is a no, and a no is a small deposit into the life you actually want. One doesn't feel like much. A few hundred make a different person.
Try it for a week. Before each yes, ask one question: what am I paying for this? You'll be surprised how often the honest answer is: too much.
